Vic: MCC could be sued over MCG smoking backflip
A powerful health lobby group could sue the Melbourne Cricket Club for damages if itreintroduces smoking areas at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The club is reportedly considering including smoking zones in the MCG's new $430 millionnorthern stand.
Such zones would contravene a 1999 agreement between the club and the Victorian HealthPromotion Foundation, VicHealth, to make the entire venue a no smoking zone.
VicHealth chief executive ROB MOODIE has called on the state government to introducelaws to force the MCG to remain smoke-free.
And Dr MOODIE says VicHealth is considering seeking damages if smoking is introduced.
Anti-smoking organisation Quit has also slammed the Melbourne Cricket Club's proposalto re-introduce smoking, labelling it backward and out-of-step with community expectations.
