Vic: Tram strike averted

A strike planned for today by Melbourne's tram drivers has been averted with transport
companies and a union agreeing on a deal.

The union yesterday threatened the strike after Yarra Trams and Swanston Trams revealed
a plan to push normal timetables onto Sunday timetables for the days between Boxing Day
and January 2.

The Rail Tram and Bus Union's LOU DI GREGORIO says marathon talks with Yarra Trams
have convinced the company to maintain normal services.

But a spokesman for Swanston Trams says the company will stick to its plan to run a
Sunday timetable on public holidays and a Saturday timetable on the Wednesday, Thursday
and Friday after Christmas.

He says the dispute with the union has been settled and there won't be any threat to
tram services today.
